Structural Health Monitoring applied to pipelines
Ducto continuously monitors circumferential deformation, ovalisation, longitudinal stress and angular displacement of above-ground and buried pipes.
Solutions
In Italy, on average 42% of the drinking water put into the network is lost. Ducto applies structural-monitoring methods to pipelines, to prevent failures and locate leaks from their onset.

01 / The problem
Much of the water-transport infrastructure is decades old and often heavily degraded. Losses come mainly from obsolete pipes, poor maintenance and the absence of digital monitoring; many networks have never been fully mapped.
Communities can bear neither the cost of the losses nor mass pipe-replacement programmes. They can, however, invest in technologies that cut losses and enable planned maintenance.
Failures of trunk mains cause service interruptions, property damage and water quality risks, and often occur with no clear warning signs.

02 / The InSensus response
Ducto continuously monitors circumferential deformation, ovalisation, longitudinal stress and angular displacement of above-ground and buried pipes.
An integrated sound-level sensor "listens" to the acoustic signals generated by the water and the pipe; algorithms dedicated to cast iron, FRP and steel indicate the position and intensity of the leak from its onset.
A radiating cable laid along the pipe picks up the signal like an antenna and forwards it to the gateway. The architecture is open to the integration of water quantity and quality sensors.
