01 / The problem

Bridges, viaducts and tunnels deteriorate continuously — thermal cycling, vibration, corrosion, heavy traffic, extreme events. Most of Italy's stock was built between 1950 and 1980 and only a small share has digital sensors today.

Traditional techniques rely on visual inspection and spot tests: costly, intermittent, and blind to what happens between one survey and the next. Optical fibre offers distributed readings but at a high cost and with complex installation.

Italy's National Bridge and Viaduct Monitoring Plan, launched in 2023, and the regulatory framework of Ministerial Decree 204/2022 (extended by the Decree of 9 December 2024) introduced uniform inspection procedures and the obligation to adopt continuous monitoring technologies.
