01 / The problem

Italy is among the European countries most exposed to natural hazards. The combination of geomorphological vulnerability, heavy traffic and ageing infrastructure calls for a prevention strategy based on predictive monitoring and planned maintenance.

Landslide monitoring is fragmented today: Civil Protection and regional environmental agencies use a mix of topographic benchmarks, inclinometers, piezometers, GPS, drones and satellite surveys, which are hard to integrate. Solutions covering the whole chain, from data to real-time remote visualisation, are rare.

In many at-risk areas the conditions — no mains power, poor access, extreme environment — make traditional instrumentation impractical to install.
