01 / The problem

Timber is a viscoelastic material: its mechanical properties change significantly with moisture content and environmental conditions. Correct monitoring requires simultaneous strain and moisture measurement, over strain ranges that can exceed ±10%.

Available solutions rely on spot instruments — traditional strain gauges, standalone moisture sensors, inclinometers — that give separate, intermittent readings and need specialist staff. Optical fibre gives distributed readings but is costly and does not integrate moisture.

This concerns both new X-Lam and glulam construction, which is growing fast, and the historic timber heritage — floors, trusses, roofs, load-bearing elements of churches and buildings — often at risk of decay.
